Endoscopic Observation of Tissue by Narrowband Illumination

We propose a new illumination method for a medical endoscope: narrow band imaging (NBI), in which the spectral bandwidth of the filtered light is narrowed. To confirm how the spectral specifications of the filtered light influence a reproduced image, an experiment was conducted observing the endoscopic images of the back mucosa of a human tongue. In addition, the effect of NBI on endoscopic images was investigated through preliminary clinical tests in colonoscopy and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. It has been shown that NBI can enhance the capillary pattern and the crypt pattern on the mucosa. These patterns are useful features for diagnosing an early cancer.     

Construction of self-assembled monolayer terminated with N-heterocyclic carbene-rhodium(I) complex moiety

Functionalization of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of alkanethiolate with metal containing unit is one of the versatile methods to obtain functional surfaces such as heterogeneous catalysts. However, organic molecules that strongly bind to transition metals at SAM terminal are limited. Recently N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) such as cyclic diaminocarbenes have emerged as strongly σ-donating ligands forming a robust bond with broad spectrum of transition metals. In the present study, for the purpose of establishment of a new robust basement for heterogeneous metal catalysts, a SAM of the alkanethiolate terminated with NHC-rhodium(I) complex moiety was prepared by utilizing a newly designed disulfide molecule bearing NHC-metal complex terminals. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and angle resolved XPS measurement revealed successful formation of the Rh-complex-terminated SAM on a gold substrate. Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) analysis suggested that the linker methylene chains connecting the rhodium complex moiety and the gold surface are in a loosely packed structure. This unique chemical species, NHC, would be a promising candidate as a basement for the construction of functional surface.     

A SAXS study of the nanometer scale hybrid structure of Si---Ti---C---O amorphous fibers

A small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) study was performed to reveal the nanometer scale hybrid structure of Si---Ti---C---O fibers prepared by the pyrolysis of polytitanocarbosilane. The SAXS profile for Si---Ti---C---O fibers is attributed to two different types of scattering entities: an anisotropic contribution from long filaments with diameters hundreds to thousands of Ångströms and an isotropic contribution from β-SiC fine clusters of about a nanometer in diameter. A drastic degradation in the tensile strength of the fibers is correlated to the characteristic variations in their long-and medium-range structure.     

Self-assembled DNA-conjugated polymer for novel DNA chip.

We developed DNA-conjugated polymer for DNA chip fabrication. A 30 mer probe DNA and disulfide bridges were covalently attached to the polymer side chain. The DNA-conjugated polymer can be specifically adsorbed on a gold substrate surface by a self-assembly technique. The interaction between fully matched DNA and DNA-conjugated polymer was investigated by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique. The DNA-conjugated polymer-modified gold surface highly recognized fully matched DNA, rather than unmatched DNA. Therefore, DNA-conjugated polymer can be used for novel DNA chip fabrication.     

Entropy production per site in (nonreversible) spin-flip processes

Entropy production per site in a (nonreversible) spin-flip process is studied. We give it a useful expression, from which a property stronger than affinity of the entropy production per site follows. Furthermore, quasi-invariance of nonequilibrium measures in the spin-flip processes is discussed via entropy production.     

ICTS measurements for p-GaN Schottky contacts

High-temperature isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy (H-ICTS) measurements were conducted to characterize near mid-gap defects, which are the origin of the memory effect in Ni/p-GaN Schottky contacts. A large single peak was detected only under the forward bias conditions. This indicates that the defects were located in the vicinity of the interface. The change of the peak height and position of the ICTS curves under various bias conditions were qualitatively interpreted by the distribution of the defects and the current flow effect.     

A Pseudo-Random Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave Coherent Lidar Using an Optical Field Correlation Detection Method

We propose a new detection method for a pseudo-random frequency modulation continuous wave (RM-CW) coherent lidar. The feature of this method is modulation of local beam with a time delayed pseudo-random sequence. Heterodyne detection and correlation detection between the received beam and the local beam are simultaneously carried out in an optical field. In the RM-CW coherent lidar using the optical field correlation detection method, the received equipment is greatly simplified. We carried out preliminary experiments and demonstrated that the new method is effective for detection of a CW coherent lidar.     

Chemically modified proton‐conducting membranes based on sulfonated polyimides: Improved water stability and fuel‐cell performance

A series of branched/crosslinked sulfonated polyimide (B/C‐SPI) membranes were prepared and evaluated as proton‐conducting ionomers based on the new concept of in situ crosslinking from sulfonated polyimide (SPI) oligomers and triamine monomers. Chemical branching and crosslinking in SPI oligomers with 1,3,5‐tris(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene as a crosslinker gave the polymer membranes very good water stability and mechanical properties under an accelerated aging treatment in water at 130 °C, despite their high ion‐exchange capacity (2.2–2.6 mequiv g^?1). The resulting polymer electrolytes displayed high proton conductivities of 0.2–0.3 S cm^?1 at 120 °C in water and reasonably high conductivities of 0.02–0.03 S cm^?1 at 50% relative humidity. In a single H₂/O₂ fuel‐cell system at 90 °C, they exhibited high fuel‐cell performances comparable to those of Nafion 112. The B/C‐SPI membranes also displayed good performances in a direct methanol fuel cell with methanol concentrations as high as 50 wt % that were superior to those of Nafion 112. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tristimulus colorimetry using a digital still camera and its application to determination of iron and residual chlorine in water samples.

Tristimulus colorimetry using a digital still camera (DSC) as a colorimeter has been developed. A photograph of a sample and standard solutions was taken simultaneously with the DSC, and it was transferred to a PC. On the PC, the colors of the sample and of the standard solutions were analyzed and L* (brightness), a* (red-green component), and b* (yellow-blue component) values were determined with laboratory-made software. A dedicated light-box containing white-color LEDs as light source was made of white acrylic to make constant exposure at each photograph. Various settings of the DSC, such as exposure mode, white balance, and so on, that affect analytical figures, were studied with determination of iron with 1,10-phenanthroline. This method was successfully applied to the determinations of iron in a river water sample and of residual chlorine in tap water samples with N,N-diethylphenylenediamine (DPD).
